NBC’s World of Dance is a dance competition like none other, celebrating styles and performers from around the world. Featuring styles like hip hop, tap, ballet, contemporary, Irish dance, flamenco, salsa, ballroom, clogging, and more performed by individuals, duos, and teams of all ages and backgrounds.
The performers are the best of the best from all corners of the world from online submissions and qualifying events across the nation. As these performers come together to show off their best moves, you might be wondering how the scoring system works as performers aim for the $1 million prize.
First off, contestants are divided into three divisions:
- Junior: any size act, 17 years old and under
- Upper: groups of 1-4, 18 and older
- Team: groups of 5+, 18 and older
All acts, regardless of division, are scored using World of Dance’s point system, which takes into consideration:
- Performance
- Technique
- Choreography
- Creativity
- Presentation
Due to the variety of performers and styles on World of Dance, the initial rounds and scoring throughout the competition focus on acts giving their best possible performance. “Judging a tapper against a contemporary dancer is so different,” notes J-Lo, “it helps us that we have these five main categories.”
Something that sets World of Dance apart from other competitions (other than the breadth, caliber, and variety of performers) is that there is no audience input in results. Each of the above categories has up to 20 points up for grabs for each performance. To be able to move to the next round in their division, acts much average at least 80 points between their 3 performances.
Within each division, there are 5 rounds of competition. In rounds 1-4, dancers complete among their division, and all divisions compete against each other for the grand prize of $1 million in the Grand Finale.
