If we had to sum up this week’s episode of NBC’s World of Dance in one word, it would be emotion. The second episode of the qualifying round brought the emotions to the next level. From beast mode to grief, performers left it all on the stage.
The second of 10 episodes followed the same format as episode one, with some additional moments with host Jenna Dewan Tatum, including candid moments with her and celebrity judge Derek Hough. Watch the full episode, and read on for performance recaps.
The Lab (Junior)
This dance crew from West Covina, California is more like a group of brothers and sisters, as opposed to just fellow dancers. The close-knit dancers have created a space where they can get away from what’s going on outside of the dance studio. Their performance blew the judges away, they “came out like professionals,” Jennifer Lopez said. And according to Ne-Yo, they set the bar for the rest of the competition.

Fik-Shun (Upper)
Already a well-known name in the dance world, Fik-Shun (season 10 So You Think You Can Dance winner) is ready to be a part of what he calls the fiercest competition around. To truly step up his game, Fik-Shun brought an emotionally-charged, love-fueled performance which had the judges on their feet. “You can’t teach that, that’s either something that’s in you, or it’s not,” Ne-Yo said.

Miami All Stars (team)
The self-proclaimed “rag-tag” group aren’t just dancers, they have day jobs and more filling their time. Partnering alone takes time and practice, but the Miami All Stars brought it to a whole new level by synchronizing their partnering as a group in their stellar choreography, set to a J-Lo song. “I love being surprised,” Derek said of their performance.

Luka & Jenalyn (Upper)
This “ballroom with a twist” performance was jam-packed with tricks and impressive choreography. The unexpected song selection brought the performance to the next level, and while the judges had some pointers for moving forward in the competition, the duo impressed.

Quick Style (Upper)
Hailing from Norway, this trio has been dancing together since they were 12. While not as common a place for dance, let alone for men, they’ve established themselves as true professionals. With an unexpected song choice of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” the trio was in sync—even emotionally.

Nick Daniels (upper)
Growing up in his mom’s dance studio, Nick has been around dance his entire life. The most emotional performance of the night was dedicated to Nick’s father who passed away from cancer three years ago. His combination of strength, flexibility, emotion, and impressive tricks paired with dynamic moments and breathes of stillness had the judges completely wowed
Final score = 87
We also got a peek at some of the performances which didn’t obtain the minimum of 80 points necessary to move forward, showing the extremely high caliber of performers in the competition.
