Ballet dancers tend to move like graceful spirits, making for a rapturous presence on stage. But it turns out they look downright otherworldly and glorious underwater. In his fantastical series Liquid Dreams, photographer Adolfo Maciocco captured classically trained ballet dancers in a whole new light—and location. Underwater, in these photographed moments, dancers seamlessly dismiss gravity as they appear to dance between worlds.

Shot off the Italian island of Sardinia, Maciocco collaborated with world-champion free-diver Davide Carrera and ballerina Diletta Antolini to get things just right. And they are. The series is perfect. Behold how Maciocco shows us dancers in a way we’ve never seen them before.
