The Cut continued on NBC’s World of Dance last night. What an emotional episode! Everyone’s giving it their all, so it’s pretty hard to not root for everyone. Seriously. But people had to be sent home! That’s how competitions work! As this was an extension of last week’s episode, Misty Copeland was once again present as a guest judge, which was obviously delightful. If you missed out on Qualifiers and Duels, you can catch up with Top 5 moments for Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 6, and Episode 7.
Anyway, let’s talk dance!
1. Kinjaz (Flying Pocket Square)
Right out of the gate, Kinjaz basically made everyone believe in magic. The rest of their performance was top notch—no doubt about it. But making a pocket square casually fly out of one dude’s hand and fly directly to another dude is beyond belief. It set the stage for their outrageously clean routine, like nothing was impossible. See them kill it right from the get-go in the video below.
2. Ian Eastwood & The Young Lions (Breaking Through)
What a clean, emotional performance from this crew. From beginning to end, you were rooting for them to deliver in this kind of hopeful, honest routine. It came across direct and clean in Eastwood’s moment of moving past his obstacles. In this, that came int he form of arms that he pushed his way through. See them pull off the simple but sincere move at :37 in the video below.
3. Fik-Shun (Umbrella Catch)
So much emotion comes through Fik-Shun’s dance narratives. His unique style of abstract storytelling catches our attention and doesn’t let go until he’s done. In this particular outing, he essentially lives an entire life and beyond, all the while shaking out moves like he has too many. Wonderfully done and such a sincere delight to behold, the dance delivered many good moments. But, honestly, it’s difficult to catch an umbrella as flawlessly as he did. Any kind of props can send things into a spin and that one is unreliable, but he did it without missing a beat. See him move with effortless grace at :24 in the video below.
4. Les Twins (Heel Twist)
They twisted, turned, and wound their way in every direction throughout an eye-catching, attention-demanding performance. From start to finish, the French twin brothers were perfectly in sync. But like Derek Hough, our favorite move, beating out that sudden drop, was that in-time heel twist. See them turn on a freakin’ dime at :38 in the video below.
5. Keone + Mari (Manic Opening)
Now, we’ve seen the (what may very well be most adorable) couple land bouncy joy and meditative melancholy, but we can add energetic mania to the list with this one. Although the performance was a stunning technical performance that balanced all moods, fun the entire time tough, it was their furious start with drums in the background that got us going. Throughout, it’s like one dancer in two bodies, so in touch with where they are and heading. It’s impossible not to feel a spark when they hit the stage. See them catch your attention from the start and hold it until the ribbons come down in the video below.
