Rhythmatic is a unique group of five master tap dancers who might make you rethink the boundaries of the artform. Their precision and talent are sure to wow judges Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, and Derek Hough on NBC’s World of Dance, the new dance competition show where the world’s best dancers as they battle it out for a $1 million prize.

(See them in action below.)

We recently caught up with the group to find out what it was like to compete, how they feel about the judges, and what music they can’t stop listening to.

Rhythmatic

Style: Tap (5 Members)

Category: Team

From: New York, New York, and Los Angeles, California

WOD: What was the best part of competing in World of Dance?

Nick: Having the freedom to choreograph without limitations and see it on some of the most phenomenal tap dancers. On a stage like this, that is incredibly rare.

Kurt: Meeting all of the insane talent! Everyone was so supportive of each other even though it was a competition. There’s no family out there like the dance family.

Patrick: Performing with some of my best guy friends, doing what we love. Tap dancing is how I started to dance and actually was the catalyst for my dance career. It was an honor to help bring tap dance into the limelight again.

Aaron B: Meeting other artist of different talents, cultures, and backgrounds. I’ve never been in a room with that much dance firepower in one place! It was pretty epic.

WOD: Who’s your favorite judge, and why?

Aaron B: Derek. He loves tap dance!

Kurt: J-Lo…you know why.

Nick: Jenna. Not a judge, but I just love her.

Patrick: J-Lo. She truly made such an incredible transition from dancer to popstar and always held onto her dance roots.

Aaron P: Ne-Yo. I liked what he was looking for in the competition. He was all about performance and execution.

WOD: What do you love most about dance?

Aaron P: The freedom to express and create in your own way. Multiple people can take away something completely different watching the same performance.

Nick: I love tap dance specifically because I don’t feel as much like an awkward white guy trying to incorporate style as I do in most other genres.

Kurt: Expression, physicality, joy of the connection with each other, the music, and that “thing” that’s greater.

Patrick: When you’re dancing, you have to be truly in the moment. You can’t think about anything else other than the music and movement.

WOD: Why do you think the world needs dance?

Patrick: The world needs dance because the world needs culture. The world needs artists pushing the boundaries of their bodies and inspiring people to move.

Kurt: Dance is supportive. With hybrids of styles from all over the world, there’s always something to learn. No discrimination. If I dance and you dance, we’re friends and can speak the same language. It’s universal.

Aaron P: The world needs dance as entertainment and release from everyday stresses. It is an escape for people to be lost and be able to forget everything and just enjoy live entertainment and art.

Aaron B: The world needs dance because it can bring us together. It brought me together with some of my closest friends. It brought all of the talented artists together that competed on the show, and it can bring people together within schools and dance communities around the world!

WOD: What music are you obsessed with right now, and why?

Nick: When it comes to music, I’m always thinking, “What would I kill to choreograph to?” Right now its “Manchester” by Kishi Bashi.

Patrick: I’m pretty down with Harry Styles new album. It’s like a neo-Beatles throwback to the ’70s.

Kurt: “Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay. For everything we dream about we just want someone in our corner. It feels good and has a solid hook/chorus to jam out to.

Aaron P: Kendrick Lamar as an artist. His new album. Woof. Down right dirty!

Aaron B: I am obsessed with all of Leon Bridges’ music because he has that old school swag. It just puts me in my happy place.
