Named for the arabic word for “twins,” the Al Taw’am duo is 18-year-old identical twin sisters Iman and Khadijah. Their unique style (completely self-taught), devotion to their Muslim faith (they never perform without their hijabs), and talent make them an impressive presence on any stage.

Soon, they will make a national appearance on NBC’s dance competition show World of Dance, where they get to show off for celeb judges J-Lo, Ne-Yo, and Derek Hough in hopes of winning the $1 million prize.

We caught up with the sisters/dancers/activists to find out what their experience was like and what dance means to them.

WOD: What was the best part of competing in World of Dance?

AT: The best part of the competition was meeting the amazing, talented dancers, such as Quick Style, Keone and Mari, The Kingdom, Femme Fatale, and Trent Jeray. The level of talent was mind blowing. We’ve watched their dance videos on social media, so it was amazing to share space with them. They were extremely supportive and all around great people.

WOD: What do you love most about dance?

AT: What began within our home turned into a lifestyle and passion. We use dance as a platform to share stories and voices and bring awareness to a variety of different social topics we feel passionate about.

Dance is our primary way of expression and how we stay connected with our history, community, and ourselves. Our hearts will always be with hip-hop, but our inspiration from other genres can be seen in our dancing. Street styles and urban dances of America and West Africa also make up our dance vocabulary.

WOD: Why do you think the world needs dance?

AT: Dance is a universal language that has no barriers. It brings people of all walks of life together. Our ancestors communicated with each other through body language. They expressed their anger, hope, and love with movement. Today, we continue to do the same. Dance is a part of us and has always been. We may not speak the same language or have the same culture or religious traditions, but the beat connects us, and it is though movement that we understand each other.

WOD: Who was your favorite judge, and why?

AT: All of the judges were amazing and have inspired us through their work. We also really appreciate the support that came from Jenna Dewan Tatum. Her encouragement was extremely motivating.

WOD: What 5 songs are you obsessed with right now/why?

1) “Cranes in the Sky” by Solange

We relate to her music, and it’s one of our favorite songs of all times.

2) “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar

The beat makes us want to dance, and we love his lyrics.

3) “Black Motion” by Imali ft. Nokwazi

We enjoy this song because you can do a lot of urban styles to it, as well as African movement.

4) “Land of the Free” by Joey Bada$$

As African Americans and activists, we relate to his message.

5) “Stand Alone” by Bob Marley

We grew up around Reggae music, and it reminds of our upbringing.
