The 2017 World of Dance Finals will be held in Pasadena on July 22, 2017, and we can’t wait. This annual event features the winners of World of Dance competitions around the world—the best of the best—facing off to win the title, plus performances by industry starts, vendors, DJs, artists, and a lot more. In anticipation of this must-see event, we’re getting to know the many competitors from around the world.

Today, we’re meeting PHLY CREW, Upper Division Winners of World of Dance Melbourne 2017. We caught up with the crew to find out how they met, what it was like to compete in WOD, what they’re looking forward to, and more.

Crew name: PHLY CREW

Title: Upper Division Winners of World of Dance Melbourne 201

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

Members: James Barry, Neale Whittaker, Aimee Regan, Mark Lace, Hannah Stewart, Neven Connolly, and Jordan Grant

WOD: Can you give us a little background about the crew: how long have you been together/how did you meet?

Phly Crew: Phly Crew is one of Sydney’s most successful Comedy/Hip Hop Dance groups. Established in 2010, Phly Crew has created a brand of our own inspired by Monty Python and the Umbilical brothers. The dynamic Duo James Barry and Neale Whittaker started the crew after working at Luna Park Sydney as street performers. They started the crew based on the idea of always pushing the boundaries of creativity.

WOD: Other than winning first place, what was your favorite part of competing at the World of Dance qualifier?

Phly Crew: We were very excited and nervous to perform a piece that has a very different energy to what we normally compete with. Rather than heading out on stage being silly Aussies, Creative Director/Choreographer James Barry conceptualized a piece that truly means a lot to each member of the team competing in Pasadena.

WOD: What do you think made your performance stand out enough to win?

Phly Crew: We hadn’t thought about the competition in terms of scoring and placing, but rather taking advantage of the incredible WOD platform to connect with people on an emotional level. The routine’s intent is to make people aware that it’s OK to speak out and talk to a friend if you’re in need.

WOD: What’s your crew’s dance philosophy?

Phly Crew: Our philosophy as a group is to be open minded and welcoming to any and all people.

WOD: What are you most excited about for the WOD Finals in Pasadena?

Phly Crew: We are so excited to meet every person at the competing. Due to our very Aussie nature, we are extremely friendly and always about expanding our community of friends in the dance world. Also, America is pretty sick.

WOD: Anything else before we go?

Phly Crew: We hope to improve as much as possible from this experience by receiving as much constructive feedback as possible. We hope to represent Australia proudly and loudly!
