WOD: What was the best part of competing in World of Dance?
KS: My favorite part was when I was actually performing in front of Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, and Ne-Yo. With all the excitement from the audience, the lights, and cameras, it just got so real for me, and I feel I danced better than I thought I could. So all that energy brought out something in me that I didn’t know I had; it felt like another level of dancing, so that was really cool.
WOD: Who’s your favorite judge, and why?
KS: That’s hard because my favorites are Derek Hough because I’ve known about him longer. And Jennifer Lopez is an amazing role model, but I learned a lot about her from my mom. I guess if I have to pick one it would be Derek Hough because I grew up watching him on Dancing With The Stars. I have been a huge fan of him ever since I was 3 years old. I feel a connection to him because watching Derek and Mark Ballas on that show started my love for dancing.
WOD: What do you love most about dance?
KS: Well, what’s there not to love? Dance is there for me all the time. I dance when I’m happy, sad, feeling strong, feeling lonely or stressed out and I need to take my mind off something. I even dance for no reason, like when I am shopping at the mall, at Costco, or in the aisles of Target. That’s why I love dance; it’s my whole life. I don’t see it as a separate thing.
WOD: Why do you think the world needs dance?
KS: The world needs dance because it is something anyone can relate to. It doesn’t matter where you live in the world, what you do, or what language you speak. Dance reaches everyone and allows people to express themselves.
WOD: What 5 songs are you obsessed with right now/why?
1) “Scared to Be Lonely” by Martin Garrix (Medasin Remix) ft. Dua Lipa
It makes me want to move even if I don’t completely understand the lyrics or meaning.
2) “Congratulations” by Post Malone ft. Quavo
The song is about working hard for your passion and changing the minds of people who didn’t think you could accomplish anything.
3) “Ending” by Isak Danielson
This song is sad, but it’s a good song and is comforting to me.
4) “Hearts Don’t Break Around Here” by Ed Sheeran
Who doesn’t like Ed Sheeran?! It’s an optimistic song.
5) “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeran
It’s another sad song, and it makes me feel appreciative of my mother and grandmother.
WOD: Anything else before we go?
KS: Another great part for me at WOD was FREE BAGELS!!!
